Morning sunlight fills a pixel-art bedroom. Luis stretches at the edge of the bed while his small brown cavapoo waits nearby.
HOME A NEW DAY

01 / MORNING

Hey, I’m Luis.

Mostly Product.
Engineer at heart.

I work where product, engineering, and trust & safety meet. I like understanding how things work, finding the right problem, and building something useful with a team.

A lot of that curiosity carries into my free time. This is a little tour of both.

AT WORK THINKING TOGETHER

02 / WORK

Building
with teams.

An engineering background.
A product perspective.

My experience spans software engineering and technical product management, with a particular interest in trust, safety, and the ways technology gets used in the real world.

Meta

Building tools that help teams investigate threats, report to authorities, and keep people safe.

Calendly

A move from engineering into product, focused on integrations, abuse, bots, and bad actors.

Rigor

Acquired by Splunk · now part of Cisco

Building software for performance monitoring and optimization, from conception through delivery.

More about my experience How I work

03 / APPROACH

How I work.

A few things I keep coming back to.

Choose the problem.

Before getting attached to a solution, understand who needs it and what’s actually getting in their way. A clearer problem makes the next decision easier.

Make the tradeoff clear.

There’s usually more than one reasonable path. Make the choices and their costs visible so the team can decide with the same information.

Learn with the team.

Build enough to test an idea, listen to what happens, and adjust. I like staying close to the technical details and learning alongside the people doing the work.

Home for dinner
Luis cooks at one kitchen island while his fiancée and two friends chat on stools. A pizza, espresso machine, gin bottles and a shaker fill out the evening.
AT HOME ROOM FOR A FEW MORE

04 / AT HOME

Good things,
shared.

Cooking, coffee, and loved ones.

Good company, fresh ingredients, and a bit of a cooking experiment marks a pretty good evening for me.

  • Something good on the table.

I love making my award-winning pizza, a frutti di mare pasta, a basted ribeye, or some savory panang curry, and outside of that, experimenting with ingredients in recipes where most wouldn't think of adding them.

  • Coffee, coffee, and friends.

I’m pretty crazy about coffee. I have a full espresso setup, try new beans all the time, and track their grind setting and my rating for every one of them.

About once a month, I host Big Umi Cafe: a Sunday morning coffee gathering for friends. Coffee’s on me, everyone brings pastries to share, and there’s a rotating seasonal drink. The name plays on the Japanese words for sea and wave, a nod to our dog.

  • Gin, one bottle at a time.

I love trying and collecting new gins. Gunpowder, Monkey 47, and Roku are my favorites so far.

Settle in
Luis and his fiancée sit together on a green couch with popcorn and a warm mug. Their small brown cavapoo sleeps curled beside them.
WINDING DOWN THE GOOD PART

05 / WINDING DOWN

A little time
to unwind.

My favorite people. A quiet evening.

Time on the couch with my fiancée and our cavapoo. Usually something to watch, something to snack on, and a dog who’s already asleep.

One more idea
Late at night, Luis works on his laptop in a rust-red reclining chair under a soft warm floor lamp. His cavapoo sleeps in a small brown donut curl on the rug.
AFTER HOURS ONE MORE IDEA

06 / AFTER HOURS

Still curious.

Following my curiosity. Experimenting with AI.

Some of my best learning starts with a late-night idea, my laptop, and my always-on coding Raspberry Pi. I build things to understand a technology, make a task easier, or see whether an idea works.

Experimenting every day. This is a log to document all that goes through my head.

I’d be glad to hear about it.
